THE 50mm PROJECT

Children of construction workers at the site of an apartment  in a Mumbai, (Bombay), India.  Such workers live in abysmal conditions, leaving their kids in surroundings where no parent would want their children to be. I had gone to the site to see the progress of construction of the new flat I'd booked there.  There I saw these kids playing, soaked in mud, and running over gravel and bricks. On one side, you could see the symbol of India's accelerating economy in the new multi-storey apartment, and on the other, these kids reminded me of the millions of people in my country who toil everyday in abject poverty.
When I pulled out the camera and shot their pictures, they had no idea what I was doing, for I am sure they had never seen a camera before. When I showed them the photo , they were so amused! This photo was shot with a Nikon D80 in August 2010.

Vipin Nair is a Mumbai-based journalist with a financial publication. He loves to shoot the city's streets and its people, and hope to become a full-time photographer some day.
